The SC União Torreense is a football club from the Portuguese city of Torres Vedras about 40 kilometers north of Lisbon. The club plays these days in the Campeonato Nacional de Seniores , the third highest league in the country.
The club was founded on May 1, 1917 as Sport Clube União Torreense . The club has played six seasons in the country's top division. In the seasons 1955/56 to 1958/59, 1964/65 and most recently 1991/92 the club was represented in the highest Portuguese league. The best results achieved Torreense in the seasons 1955/56 and 1956/57 a placement in seventh place. Typically, the club can be found in the third division. By 2012, Torreense also played six seasons in the second and five in the fourth division.
The best result in the Portuguese Cup competition was achieved in 1956 when they moved into the final against FC Porto , but lost 2-0 there at the Estádio Nacional in Lisbon.
The club's stadium is the Estádio Manuel Marques , which opened in 1925 and has a capacity of 12,000 seats.
Around 1954 to 1958, João Morais played for the club that would later win the European Cup Winners' Cup with Sporting Lisbon and in 1966 with the national team around Eusébio, who became known as Magriços , came third at the 1966 World Cup. Another well-known former player is Zé António , who appeared 64 times for Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga from 2005 to 2007 .
