Sporting Clube de Portugal , often just called Sporting CP , known in German-speaking countries as Sporting Lisbon and often listed as SCP , is a sports club from the Portuguese capital Lisbon, founded in 1906 . After the heraldic animal , the club is often referred to as lions ( Portuguese Leões ). The club colors are green and white.

The Sporting football team plays its home games at Estádio José Alvalade , which has space for 50,095 spectators and was one of the venues for the 2004 European Football Championship . The team's greatest successes were winning the 1964 European Cup Winners' Cup and making it to the 2005 UEFA Cup final in their own stadium. The Lions also won 18 national championships and the Portuguese Cup 17 times , making them one of the three most successful clubs in Portugal. Their traditional local rival is Benfica Lisbon . The club is known for its excellent youth work, which includes players like Ballon d'Or winners Cristiano Ronaldo and Luís Figo, as well as João Moutinho , Paulo Futre and Rui Patrício . At the 2016 European Football Championship , where the Portuguese became European champions , eleven of the 23 players came from the ranks of Sporting. The club's most expensive sale for its own youth player was 40 million euros in August 2016 when João Mário moved to Inter Milan .

The commercial management of the professional football department is in the hands of the listed stock corporation Sporting Clube de Portugal Futebol SAD . The controversial businessman Álvaro Sobrinho is the largest single shareholder with 29.9%.

In addition to soccer, the club also operates various other sports, including a. Handball , swimming , roller hockey and diving . But after football, athletics is the main focus of the club. There were other sports in the past. Fencing, basketball, volleyball and cycling were practiced; in the 1950s and 1960s there was even its own rally and motorcycle racing team. After FC Barcelona , Sporting is the most successful sports team in Europe in terms of titles and trophies won in all sports in which the club participates.

history

Beginnings

The club emerged from an initiative of a group of people who originally founded the Klub Sport Club de Belas in 1902 and the Campo Grande Sporting Club in 1904 . In 1906 these clubs officially merged under the name Sporting Clube de Portugal .

Sporting's first game was on February 3, 1907 against Cruz Negra and lost 5-1. In the first duel with future long-term rivals Sport Lisboa , a predecessor club of Benfica , a 2-1 victory was achieved. In the 1907/1908 season the club was regional runner-up. In 1910, the year José Alvalade became club president, Sporting won the championship title in tennis , pole vault , shot put and long jump .

First successes

The club won in 1912 and 1915 the Lisbon championship in football and the Portuguese Super Cup " Cândido de Oliveira " with a 3-1 victory over SL Benfica . In the sport of cycling , the club won the prestigious Lisboa - Porto race in 1912 , took third place in the Tour de France and second place in the Tour of Spain.

In the 1920 era, Sporting won its first Portuguese championship in a final against Académica Coimbra .

In 1922 the rugby department was opened. In 1926 the green and white striped jerseys were worn for the first time. After a 1928 win against rivals Benfica, in which the players swapped shirts for the new striped shirts at halftime, the latter became the club's official shirts for good. Green and white split jerseys, which were used from 1908, are still used as gala or away jerseys.

1940-1960

With the green and white striped jerseys, the SCP won 18 football championship titles and four cup victories in the 1940s and 1950s.

Sporting's José Travassos was the first Portuguese player to be nominated for a European selection in 1955 and played against Great Britain's selection in Belfast .

On June 10, 1956, the Estádio José Alvalade in the Freguesia Lumiar was inaugurated. 1956 and 1957 the runner won Manuel Faria to on New Year held Saint Silvester Road Race in São Paulo .

From 1960

In 1964, the club achieved its greatest success in football by winning the European Cup Winners' Cup against the Hungarian football club MTK Budapest . After a 3: 3 in the Heysel Stadium in Brussels , a replay had to be scheduled. The SCP won this in the Bosuil Stadium in Antwerp with a corner kick directly converted by João Morais after 20 minutes 1-0. On the way to the final, SCP scored 16: 1 against APOEL Nicosia from Cyprus, the highest win to date in a European Cup game and won 5: 0 after a 1: 4 first leg defeat against Manchester United at home. In the semifinals, after results of 1: 1 and 0: 0 against Olympique Lyon, a playoff was necessary, which ended in the Stadium Metropolitano de Madrid with 1: 0 for Sporting.

In 1971, the club signed the Argentine soccer player Héctor Yazalde from the Bonaren suburban club CA Independiente . In the 1973/74 season, Yazalde scored 46 goals in 30 games and still holds the European record for most goals in one season.

In athletics , the club is very successful both nationally and internationally with 215 national and 89 international titles. Carlos Lopes won the gold medal in the marathon at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , making it the first Portuguese Olympic champion.

The best professional cyclist in Portugal Joaquim Agostinho was also part of the club. He took part in the Tour de France 13 times and finished third in 1978 and 1979.

In roller hockey , Sporting was the best club in the world for a while and won the European Cup Winners 'Cup in 1977, three European Cup Winners' Cups in 1981, 1985 and 1991 and the CERS Cup in 1984.

Due to the 1: 2 defeat against CS Maritimo on the last day of the 2017/18 season, Sporting missed the Champions League qualification and will have to compete in the Europa League next season. In the following week, this led to around 50 masked men storming the Sporting training grounds, including injuring the head of the player Bas Dost . This resulted in great unrest within the club, which is why several players canceled their contracts and left the club. The trainer Jorge Jesus also quit his job.

Bruno de Carvalho was temporarily arrested in November 2018 . De Carvalho was President of Sporting until June 2018 and is said to have ordered the attack on the players by an ultra group out of displeasure about the missed Champions League qualification.
