Luís Carlos Novo Neto (born May 26, 1988 in Póvoa de Varzim ) is a Portuguese football player .

Career

In the club

Neto played in his youth for Varzim SC , the biggest club in his hometown. For the 2006/07 season he signed his first professional contract with the second division team. Initially only used sporadically, he finally rose to become a regular player in the 2010/11 season . Despite convincing performances, Neto could not prevent the club from relegating to the third division at the end of the season. Thereupon the defender was courted by some Portuguese first division clubs and finally moved to the island of Madeira to Nacional Funchal before the start of the 2011/12 season . There Neto immediately fought for a regular place and played 25 league games. At the end of the season, both FC Porto and Arsenal were interested in signing the young Portuguese. However, Neto decided to move to the Italian Serie A and was signed by AC Siena for 1.7 million euros . There, too, he was a regular player in the first half of the season before he changed country and club again in February 2013 for around six million euros and signed a contract with Zenit St. Petersburg . With Zenit he won two championship and one cup titles. He moved to Sporting Lisbon for the 2019/20 season and returned to Portugal.

In the national team

Neto played for the U20 and U21 national teams of his home country. In October 2012 he was appointed to the senior national team for the first time by national coach Paulo Bento . His debut took place on February 6, 2013 as part of a friendly against Ecuador .
