The Clube Desportivo Nacional , CD Nacional for short and known in German-speaking countries as Nacional Funchal (rarely also Nacional Madeira ), is a football club whose team plays in the Segunda League . It was founded in 1910 and is based in Funchal , Madeira . The home stadium is called Estádio da Madeira and has 5,200 seats. The sports center has a total of two grass and two artificial turf pitches. The club colors are black and white.
history
CD Nacional Funchal reached the Primeira Liga for the first time in the mid-1990s and has always been in the top Portuguese league since its renewed promotion to the 2002/03 season. Most of the time, the team ended up in places 4-8. The club also took part in the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Europa League several times.
The time had come for the first time after CDN was able to narrowly overtake Sporting Braga in the 2003/04 season and, with fourth place, achieved the best placement in the first division up to that point. The team's three key players were defensive midfielder Paulo Assunção , 19-goal center forward Adriano - both later moved to FC Porto - and Miguelito , who was described as the best winger in the league , who went to Benfica in 2006 .
In addition, Nacional reached the quarter-finals of the Taça de Portugal , the Portuguese National Cup in 2003/04 .
In the following season CD Nacional Funchal played in the UEFA Cup , but after two defeats (2: 1 and 2: 0) against Sevilla FC in the first round before the group stage.
At the next European Cup participation - Nacional had finished the pre-season in 5th place - the 2006/07 UEFA Cup ended in the first round. Against Rapid Bucharest had to decide in the second leg (after 0: 1 and 1: 0) the extra time, in which the Romanians scored two more goals.
In the 2008/09 season, CD Nacional led the table in the Portuguese League for a few weeks and ended up again in fourth place in front of Sporting Braga. The Brazilian striker Nenê stood out in particular , scoring 20 goals and becoming the first Nacional player to be top scorer .
In the same season, the team reached the semi-finals in the Portuguese Cup , which was lost 5: 4 after the return leg, with the Estádio da Madeira only the 90th minute bringing the decision in favor of FC Paços de Ferreira .
Due to the good performance in the strong Portuguese league, the team took part directly in the fourth qualifying round for the newly designed UEFA Europa League in the 2009/10 season . However, the team had to do without Nenê, as he moved to the Italian Serie A club Cagliari Calcio for the club's record sum of 4.5 million euros . Still, the underdog surprisingly beat previous UEFA Super Cup winner Zenit Saint Petersburg . A 4-3 first leg win in front of their own crowd was followed by a 1-1 draw in Saint Petersburg, in which youngster Rúben Micael was able to equalize in the last minute. In the group phase, the team then met other prominent opponents: Behind Werder Bremen , the previous season's UEFA Cup finalists, and Athletic Bilbao , Nacional Funchal only finished third and was eliminated in the end. The bottom of the group was FK Austria Wien , against which CDN scored a historic 5-1 win in Funchal.
In the 2016/17 season , the CD Nacional was the last to be relegated from the first division, and in the following season , as champions, they were directly promoted again.
Trivia
- Probably the most famous player at Nacional so far was Cristiano Ronaldo , who played there in his youth.
