The FIFA World Footballer of the Year ( English 1991–2009: FIFA World Player of the Year, since 2016: The Best FIFA Men's Player ) is an annual award from 1991 to 2009 and again since 2016 by world football 's governing body FIFA as part of The Best FIFA Football Awards Awarded for the " World Footballer of the Year ". Since 2001, the FIFA World Player of the Year awards have also been presented. In addition, since 2007, the French trade journal France Football has also awarded the world footballer the more prestigious Ballon d'Or , which has existed since 1956 . From 2010 to 2015 , both awards were consideredFIFA Ballon d'Or awarded together.

story

The award was presented by FIFA for the first time in 1991 at the FIFA World Player Gala in Zurich under the designation FIFA World Player of the Year . In addition to the winner, the second and third place winners also received a trophy that differed little from the winner's trophy. Before that, only the British football magazine World Soccer had honored the world's best player every year since 1982. Therefore, the title holders up to and including 1990 are also referred to as "unofficial world footballer of the year". However, this honor was awarded independently of FIFA and continued to be awarded after 1991.

The FIFA Fair Play Award , which has existed since 1987, was also presented at the gala . In 1999 , Pele received an honorary title when he was voted world footballer of the century by FIFA . The FIFA Presidential Award followed in 2001 and since that year the FIFA World Player of the Year has also been honored by FIFA. The last FIFA-only gala in 2009 saw the debut of the FIFA FIFPro World XI and the FIFA Puskás Award for the best goal of the year.

In 2007, the French trade magazine France Football competed with the FIFA World Player of the Year with the Ballon d'Or , which honored " Europe's Footballer of the Year " from 1956 to 2006 , since from then on all players worldwide could be chosen and it was in fact the same was an election for “ World Footballer of the Year ”. After three years in which the FIFA World Players of the World were identical to the Ballon d'Or winners, both awards have been merged under the title FIFA Ballon d'Or . With the aforementioned accolades and the newly introduced FIFA Men's and Women's World Coach of the Year honour , until 2015 this was awarded at the FIFA Ballon d'Or Gala where the world footballer received a Ballon d'Or from France Football while it stayed with the classic plaque for the world footballer. In this context, Pelé received a FIFA Ballon d'Or Prix d'Honneur for his life's work in 2013.

The cooperation agreement between FIFA and France Football expired in 2016. After FIFA President Gianni Infantino tried to take over the award completely and it was therefore not possible to agree on an extension, the two awards were separated again. The FIFA Ballon d'Or winners, 4-time Lionel Messi and 2-time Cristiano Ronaldo , are featured in the regular winners lists of both awards. Since 2016, FIFA's World Players and World Women's Players have been presented at the new gala The Best FIFA Football Awards , for which a new dark-colored trophy has been designed as a homage to the FIFA World Cup Trophy, with an identical finish for both players and coaches and given in a smaller version to members of the World XI.

The FIFA World Player of the Year also won the Ballon d'Or 16 times in the same year (not counting the winners of the FIFA Ballon d'Or from 2010 to 2015). Only Lothar Matthäus (1991), Romário (1994), Ronaldo (1996), Zinédine Zidane (2000, 2003), Luís Figo (2001), Ronaldinho (2004) and Robert Lewandowski (2020, 2021) did not win the Ballon d' or

allocation mode

The winner was determined by a vote among the coaches and captains of each national team. They each name the three best footballers in their opinion, whereby none of the three may come from their own country. First place earns five points, second place three points, and third place one point. All points are added.

From 2016, the allocation method was changed. Since then, the coaches and captains of all national teams, together with a journalist from each country that has a FIFA-recognized national team and fans registered on the FIFA website, choose the FIFA World Player of the Year from a shortlist of 11 players. The votes of these four groups have equal weight. However, national team captains who are themselves nominated are not allowed to vote for themselves. All voters place three players each on place 1, 2 or 3, which earns 5, 3 or one point. The player with the most points wins.

FIFA World Player of the Year

Lothar Matthäus was the first winner in 1991.
In 1992, Marco van Basten became the first person to win Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player of the Year at the same time.
George Weah , FIFA World Player of the Year and 1995 Africa's Footballer of the Year
Ronaldo is a three-time winner (1996, 1997, 2002), he was the first to be honored twice in a row.
Zinédine Zidane , also a three-time FIFA World Player (1998, 2000, 2003)
Ronaldinho has been awarded twice in a row (2004, 2005).

No Ballon d'Or was awarded in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the supposedly unsecured equal opportunities .

Statistics and Frequencies

So far, only players who were active in either the Italian Serie A , the Spanish Primera División , the English Premier League and, for the first time in 2020, the German Bundesliga , have been elected FIFA World Player of the Year . The most common are FC Barcelona players , followed by Real Madrid . The prize is thus closely linked to the European Footballer of the Year award, which is determined by European sports journalists and in which all footballers playing in Europe are eligible.

Most awards went to Brazil , followed by Argentina and Portugal , with the latter almost exclusively won by Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi . In the years of the football World Cup , one player from the world champion team was always voted FIFA World Player of the Year. The first exception was Messi in 2010, in the newly introduced FIFA Ballon d'Or contest. This trend continued under the subsequent dominance of Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo who, with the exception of Luka Modrić in 2018, have dominated since 2008 and have been in the top 3 almost consistently ever since. After the 2018 World Cup, there was no world champion in the top 3, instead a runner-up in Modrić won the FIFA World Player Choices.

Sixteen FIFA World Players also received Ballon d'Or awards in the year of the award (1992, 1993, 1995, 1997-1999, 2002, 2005-2009, 2016-2019), formerly as Europe's Player of the Year, now also as Best Player in the World. George Weah was not only FIFA World Player of the Year and Ballon d'Or winner in 1995, but also Africa's Footballer of the Year.
