Argentina's Footballer of the Year
A footballer of the year has been voted in Argentina since 1970 . The award is presented every year in mid-December by the Circulo de Periodistas Deportivos , the group of sports journalists. The official name of the award is Olimpia de Plata al Mejor Futbolista ( Spanish for example: Silver Olimpia for the best football player ). It is part of a series of sports awards known as Premios Olimpia .
You can choose from players with Argentine citizenship and foreigners who are under contract in the Argentine Primera División . Since 2008, one player in Argentina (Olimpia de Plata al Fútbol Local) and one player abroad (Olimpia de Plata al Fútbol del Exterior) has been chosen.
The most successful player so far is Lionel Messi , who won the twelfth title in 2019, ahead of the four-time award winners Diego Maradona and Juan Román Riquelme . A player from FC Barcelona , ten times from CA Boca Juniors , eight times from CA River Plate and seven times from CA Independiente received the award; these clubs have so far provided the most players.
