From 1970 to 1994, the magazine has named France Football next European Footballer of the Year and African Footballer of the Year . The African Football Association CAF has also been voting for a Footballer of the Year since 1992 .
In 1998, the IFFHS also determined Africa's Footballer of the Century in a multi-stage survey process and honored it at the 1999 World Football Gala . On the occasion of the upcoming 50th anniversary of its founding, the CAF also carried out an online survey in 2006 to find the best African player of the past 50 years (1957–2007).
The awarding of the honor by the CAF hit the headlines in 2008 when Didier Drogba was withheld the honor because he had canceled his participation in the award ceremony because of his team's participation in the Africa Cup in 2008 . The honored Frédéric Kanouté received the title because he was present at the award ceremony, as his national team had already been eliminated from the African Cup.
