Samuel Osei "Sammy" Kuffour (born September 3, 1976 in Kumasi ) is a former German- Ghanaian soccer player . He played mostly as a center-back but was also used as a right full-back from time to time. He had his greatest successes with FC Bayern Munich , with whom he won the Champions League once and the German championship and the DFB Cup several times.

societies

Kuffour played from the age of seven to fourteen with Fantomas Kumasi in his hometown and in 1990 moved to local rivals King Faisal Babes . In 1991 he got the chance to move abroad and joined the youth department of Turin FC . He played there for two years until Bayern Munich signed him. From 1993 to 2005 he played for the German record champions, from 1994 in the first team. On October 29, 1994, Kuffour made his debut at 2-2 in the home game against VfB Stuttgart , against whom he also scored his first Bundesliga goal on October 15, 1997 with the 3: 3 goal. In retrospect, Kuffour described the early departure from home as a difficult step. Shortly before the second half of the 1995/96 season , he was loaned to the second division club 1. FC Nürnberg until the end of the season. In January 2001, FC Barcelona showed great interest in the then 24-year-old, but Bayern manager Uli Hoeneß described the Ghanaian as "not for sale".

He achieved his greatest successes with FC Bayern: He lost the Champions League final against Manchester United in 1999 , but won it in 2001 in Milan against FC Valencia . In the following game for the World Cup against the counterpart from South America, the Boca Juniors , Kuffour contributed with his goal to 1-0 after extra time to win the title. In addition, he won six German championships, four times the DFB Cup and five times the League Cup. The Ghanaian has scored seven goals in 175 Bundesliga games. After signing Lúcio in the summer of 2004, Kuffour was only center-back number five behind Robert Kovač , Martin Demichelis , Thomas Linke and the Brazilian world champion. Thus it became apparent that the company would soon be leaving. In December 2004, Middlesbrough FC's interest in Kuffour was announced, but a change did not materialize.

For the 2005/06 season he moved to the Italian first division club AS Roma , where he received a three-year contract. After a good start, in which Roma fans compared to the Brazilian icon Aldair, things quickly went downhill. The 2006/07 season played Kuffour on loan from league rivals AS Livorno . He was last active in the European Cup for Livorno .

After half a year without playing for AS Roma, Kuffour moved to the first division club Ajax Amsterdam in January 2008 , where he was scheduled for the resigned Jaap Stam . Kuffour was unable to close the gap, which is why he left Ajax after only two appearances in six months. After a month without a club, the change to FK Chimki in the Russian Premjer League was announced as fixed, but this turned out to be newspaper duck; thereupon Kuffour's advisor Giuseppe dello Russo finally announced the end of Kuffour's career in early September 2008. Kuffour himself stated that he had just taken time out and was still looking for a new club. In April 2009 he finally signed a contract with Asante Kotoko , the former champion of the Ghana Premier League , with whom he finally ended his career after the three-month contract period.

Kuffour was known for his inconsistencies and dropouts. On good days he was a world-class defender, on bad days he was a threat to the team's success.

National team

He played his first game for Ghana at the age of 17 against Sierra Leone . From March 5 to 20, 1993, he took part in the U-20 World Cup in Australia, played six games up to the final, which was lost 2-1 to Brazil, and scored on March 9, in the second group game (at 2 : 2-draw against Germany ) the 1-0 opening goal and thus his only tournament goal. From August 21 to September 4, 1993 he took part in the U-17 World Cup in Japan, completed all games except for the quarter-finals in the 1-0 victory over Australia, but lost the final 2-1 against Nigeria.

With the Olympic team, he took part in the Olympic soccer tournament in 1992 and 1996 . In the first tournament, in the game for 3rd place (1-0 victory over Australia), he won the bronze medal with the team . He also took part in the African Championships in 1996 , 1998 , 2000 (since 1999 captain of the senior national team ), 2002 , 2006 , with 4th place in 1996 being the biggest success in the national team so far.

Kuffour also participated in the World Cup in 2006 in part, with him in the first group match against Italy underwent a major failure that he followed in his position of Illiasu Shilla was ousted. When the back pass to their own goalkeeper, the ball unlucky enough to shoot-ready striker Vincenzo Iaquinta , who made the preliminary decision of his team with the 2-0 in the 83rd minute.
