Charles Kwablan Akonnor (born March 12, 1974 in Accra ) is a former Ghanaian soccer player and current coach who also has German nationality . He is the coach of the Ghanaian national team .

Club career

Akonnor came to Germany in 1992 with Samuel Kuffour from Ghana. He played for SC Fortuna Köln for six years and moved to VfL Wolfsburg in 1998 . There he developed into a top performer over time and was captain of the team in the 2001/2002 season. He suffered repeated injuries and was operated on on his knee in early 2003. He then failed to make the leap into the team and moved to SpVgg Unterhaching at the beginning of 2004 . In 2005 he moved to AC Horsens in Denmark.

Akonnor played in Wolfsburg in the attacking midfield, in Wolfsburg as a director and last season more as an assistant for Stefan Effenberg . In the year and a half in Unterhaching, he played on the left flank and caused danger in the opposing penalty area with his precise crosses.

The left foot played the 2008/2009 season at SC Langenhagen in the Lower Saxony Football League.

National team

Akonnor took part in the 1993 U-20 World Cup and played 4 games (1 goal). The team lost to Brazil 1: 2 in the final. At the 1996 Olympic soccer tournament, Ghana and Akonnor made it to the quarter-finals, where they again lost to Brazil 2-4. Here he played 3 games (1 goal).

Akonnor played 13 games in qualifying for the World Cup in 1994, 1998 and 2002. He scored 2 goals. In 1994, 1996, 1998 and 2000 Akonnor took part in four editions of the African Cup of Nations. However, they never got above 4th place (1996). Akonnor was also the captain of the "Black Stars".

Coaching career

In early 2009 he took over the coaching position at the Ghanaian first division club Sekondi Eleven Wise FC , but was fired there in February 2010. On January 22, 2010, he stopped as a trainer at the Sekondi Wise Fighters and was replaced by Hans-Dieter Schmidt . He took over the vacant post of sports director at Eleven Wise. On March 22, 2012 Akonnor was introduced as the new coach at the Ghana Premier League club Hearts of Oak and replaced the Serb Nebojša Vučićević . He ended his coaching activity there on November 1, 2012

Akonnor has been the coach of the Ghanaian national team since January 2020 .
