At the XXV. At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona , a football competition was held. With Spain, the host was able to win again for the first time since 1920. It was the last victory of a European team so far. With Australia, an oceanic team reached the semi-finals for the first time.
The venues were the Camp Nou and the Estadi Sarrià in Barcelona, the Nova Creu Alta in Sabadell, the La Romareda in Saragossa and the former Estadio Luis Casanova in Valencia. For the second time since 1984 no games of the Olympic football tournament took place in the actual Olympic stadium. The tournament was one of the worst-attended in Olympic history. Only 2,000 spectators came to some preliminary round matches.
The European qualification took place as part of the U-21 European Championship . Germany could not qualify after the reunification of the two German states.
The back pass rule celebrated its official premiere at this tournament.
