At the XVII. At the 1960 Olympic Games Rome , a football knockout round in this tournament began with the semi-finals; a quarter-final was not played, so that only the winners of the four preliminary round groups could qualify. In addition to Rome, the venues were the Stadio Olimpico , where only the final took place, and the Stadio Flaminio , Florence , Grosseto , L'Aquila , Livorno , Naples and Pescara .
Host Italy could not use the home bonus and only finished fourth.
Denmark's silver medal was overshadowed by an airplane accident: on the way to a preparation game for the tournament, eight players, including three already nominated for the Olympic tournament, fell to their deaths with a De Havilland DH.89 Dragon Rapide shortly after the start in Copenhagen .

qualification Stages In addition to the Stadio Olimpico as the final venue, seven stadiums were selected.
