Tarcisio Burgnich (born April 25, 1939 in Ruda ( UD ), † May 26, 2021 in Forte dei Marmi ) was an Italian football player and coach .

As a player, the world-class defender was fourth with Italy in the 1960 Olympic Games, European champion in 1968 and vice world champion in 1970. With Inter Milan he was four times champion, twice winner of the European Cup and just as often world cup winner. He also won a championship with Juventus and the Italian Cup with Napoli.

Player career

In the club

Burgnich was born in Ruda , just under 30 kilometers southeast of Udine . In his youth he joined AC Udinese . He made his debut at the age of just twenty on the penultimate match day of the 1958/59 season at AC Milan, who were established champions, with a 7-0 defeat. In the next season he was in seven of 34 league games of his team fighting relegation.

He impressed enough to be included in the Italian squad for the football tournament at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome. There he had a regular place next to Gianni Rivera and Giovanni Trapattoni from the second game of the Italians . In the 3-1 win over Brazil, which secured group victory, he met Gérson for the first time , with whom a reunion at the 1970 World Cup finals should take place. In the semifinals, Italy failed after a 1-1 final score by drawing lots at the eventual tournament winner Yugoslavia. In the decision for third place, the Italians lost to Hungary around Flórián Albert with 1: 2.

For the new season Burgnich was signed by the champions and cup winners Juventus Turin . In the successful defense of the championship of the team around Giampiero Boniperti , Omar Sívori and the legendary Englishman John Charles , he was in 13 games. In the European Cup, where Juventus was eliminated in the first round against CDNA Sofia from Bulgaria, he was not used. In Turin, however, he was considered not to fit the style of the team and his slight squint was also criticized. So after only one season he moved to Sicily for FC Palermo , where he immediately established himself as a regular player. On the 26th matchday he also scored his first of six goals in Serie A there , when he made the final score in the 4-2 win at Juventus. At the end of the season, Palermo was eighth, five places ahead of Juventus.

In 1962 Burgnich was signed by Inter Milan , where coach Helenio Herrera put together one of the best club teams in Europe. Burgnich was soon seen as an uncompromising and tough defender in a world-class format, which he owed not least to coach Herrera. Since he rarely went on the offensive and was enormously strong in duels, Burgnich was predestined for the catenaccio , Inter's recipe for success. In the back he formed a defensive bulwark with Giacinto Facchetti , in midfield playmaker Luis Suárez set the pace and Sandro Mazzola , Mario Corso and Jair da Costa whirled in the attack . "Grande Inter" was born and should rush from success to success in the next few years. With Inter he won the Scudetto in 1963, 1965 and 1966 . The top performer was also successful internationally and won the European Champions Cup with final victories over Real Madrid and Benfica Lisbon in 1964 and 1965 . In both years there were final games for the World Cup against CA Independiente from Argentina, which Inter won after hard fights. Burgnich stayed with Internazionale for twelve years, won his fourth league title in 1971 and left Milan in 1974.

He played for SSC Napoli until 1977 , with whom he won the Coppa Italia , the Italian Cup, in 1976 with a 4-0 final win over Hellas Verona . At the age of 38 he ended his playing career there.

In the national team

On November 10, 1963, Burgnich played his first international match for the Squadra Azzurra against the Soviet Union . In 1966 he took part in the World Cup in England , where Italy disappointed and had to return home after a disgraceful preliminary round (0-1 defeat against North Korea ).

In 1968 the team rehabilitated when they won the European title. In 1970 he was in the semi-finals of the World Cup with his home country , where they met Germany . He scored his first goal in the national dress when he scored 2: 2 in the so-called "match of the century ". Burgnich found the ball in front of his feet after a saved free-kick by Gianni Rivera and he had no trouble hitting the goal from five meters. In the final Italy was outclassed by Brazil 1: 4 and Burgnich had to guard superstar Pelé . After the game he revealed: “Before the final, I said to myself: Pelé is made of flesh and bones, just like me. Then I realized I was wrong. ”Pelé scored a goal and played Burgnich dizzy.

At the 1974 World Cup , Italy was eliminated after the preliminary round. In the game against Poland , he completed his last international match.

Coaching career

After his active career, Burgnich worked as a coach for many different clubs in the first to fourth leagues. Successes like in the times of his playing career were denied him.
