Forte dei Marmi is an Italian municipality with 7113 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Lucca on the Ligurian Sea .

geography

The place is located about 35 km northwest of the provincial capital Lucca and about 90 km west of the regional capital Florence in the climatic classification of Italian communities in zone C, 1 402 GG.

The neighboring municipalities are Montignoso ( MS ), Pietrasanta and Seravezza .

history

The symbol of the city is Il Fortino , a fort that the Grand Duke of Tuscany , Leopold I , had built in 1788. The port used to be used to ship Carrara marble , which is quarried in the Apuan Alps . The discovery of the marble layers goes back to the sculptor Michelangelo , who on behalf of the Grand Duke was able to develop marble seams here in addition to the nearby Carrara .

The FIAT owner family Agnelli has lived here in the summer since the 1920s . Today the property with a tunnel to the beach is a 5-star hotel . Thomas Mann was on a trip to Forte dei Marmi in 1926. He used the place as a template for "Torre di Venere" in his political novella Mario and the Magician . Five years earlier, the famous writer Aldous Huxley had settled in Forte dei Marmi for some time.

The tenor Andrea Bocelli also lives here. Forte dei Marmi is the birthplace of Queen Paola of Belgium . Edmund Stoiber is an honorary citizen of the place.

The glamorous seaside resort on Versilia lives from tourism and is mainly visited in summer. Berths on the beach can cost up to several hundred euros a day.
