history

The name means place on the Serchio and goes back to a place where in the Middle Ages, around the 8th century, markets were held for the surrounding villages and castles. Until the 19th century the place was called Pieve di Castelvecchio , after a partially preserved fortress just south of the Pieve (Località Sala). This protected the passes to the north and west in the Middle Ages. The lords of the place were the Conti di Piazza e Sala , which consisted of the bishops of Lucca, the Cattani di Versilia and the Malaspina , but were religiously subordinate to the Bishop of Luni .
