history

From the Middle Ages the place was under the Malaspina family until it came under the control of Florence in 1477. A year later they built the city walls, which were renewed in 1540. The place has been called Città nobile since 1849 . In 1920 the community was shaken by a severe earthquake.

During the Second World War , on July 13, 1944, 36 civilians were killed in an attack by Allied bombers in Fivizzano and parts of the city center were destroyed.

Between May and September 1944 there were massacres of the civilian population in six districts (Sassalbo, Mommio, San Terenzo, Bardine di San Terenzo, Vinca and Tenerano) by the German 16th SS Panzer Grenadier Division "Reichsführer SS" under the leadership of Walter Reder , partly supported by units of the Italian "Black Brigades" , in which over 400 residents were murdered, including women, children and old people.
