Denis Verdini (born May 8, 1951 in Fivizzano , Province of Massa-Carrara ) is an Italian banker and politician . He was the coordinator of the parties Forza Italia (2008-09) and Il Popolo della Libertà (2009-2013) and a member of the Italian Senate (2013-2018).

Life

Denis Verdini completed a degree in political science at the University of Florence , where the later Prime Minister Giovanni Spadolini ( PRI ) was one of his professors. He then practiced as a tax advisor. In 1991, the Verdini was chairman cooperative bank Cassa Rurale e Artigiana di Campi Bisenzio (agricultural or crafts Checkout Campi Bisenzio ), from the Institute Credito Cooperativo Fiorentino emerged. Under Verdini's leadership, the number of shareholders more than doubled by 2009, the total of the plants increased from 15 million to 405 million. In the academic year 1996/97 he taught economic history at the Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali (LUISS) in Rome. He was a shareholder in the daily newspaper Il Foglio, published by Giuliano Ferrara , and also writes for Il Tempo and La Nazione .

Verdini was a member of the Partito Socialista Italiano (PSI) in the 1980s . In the parliamentary elections in 1992 he stood for the Partito Repubblicano Italiano (PRI), in 1994 for the Patto Segni - both without success. He then joined Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia party , for which he was elected to the regional council of Tuscany in 1995 . He became vice president of the regional council. He was re-elected five years later. In the 2001 parliamentary election , Verdini was elected to the Camera dei deputati for Forza Italia , of which he was a member until 2013. In May 2008, Verdini became the coordinator of the Forza Italia party, responsible for the merger with the Alleanza Nazionale and the formation of the center-right collecting party Il Popolo della Libertà (PdL). After the merger in March 2009, he was one of the three coordinators of the PdL until 2013. He was considered a close confidante of the then Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

In the 2013 general election , Verdini was elected to represent Tuscany in the Italian Senate . After the split in the PdL in November 2013, he was again a member of Forza Italia , which has been in the opposition since then. Verdini endorsed the Patto del Nazareno negotiated in January 2014 between Berlusconi and the chairman of the ruling party PD, Matteo Renzi , for constitutional reforms and a new right to vote. In July 2015, Verdini broke with Berlusconi and left Forza Italia. He then founded the Senate faction Alleanza Liberalpopolar Autonomy (ALA) with other FI dissenters and senators from smaller center-right parties , which voted for constitutional reforms with the Renzi government . The constitutional amendment failed at the constitutional referendum in December 2016 . The subsequently formed Gentiloni government no longer supported Verdini's faction. For the 2018 parliamentary elections , he formed a joint list of ALA and PRI, but lost his Senate seat.
