After the resignation of Prime Minister Arnaldo Forlani , President Alessandro Pertini asked Spadolini to form a government in June 1981, which he unexpectedly succeeded after tough and persistent negotiations. On June 28, 1981, Spadolini became the first head of government of a post-war Italian government that did not belong to the Democrazia Cristiana ; he is also the only Prime Minister of his party to date.
