Nicola Mancino (born October 15, 1931 in Montefalcione , Avellino province ) is a former Italian politician of the Democrazia Cristiana (DC), the Partito Popolare Italiano (PPI) and most recently the party La Margherita - Democrazia è Libertà .

Life

After attending school, Mancino studied law and after graduating worked as a lawyer and later as a publicist . At first he was also involved in regional policy and was President of the Campania region from 1971 to 1972 and 1975 to 1976 .

On June 20, 1976, he was elected for the first time as a candidate of the DC to a member of the Senato della Repubblica (Senate) and was initially a member until his resignation on July 29, 1992. During his long term membership in the Senate, he was a member of numerous standing committees and, from September 1977 to July 1981, was vice-chairman of the Standing Committee on Constitutional Affairs .

In January 1981 he also became vice-chairman of the faction of the DC in the Senate and held this function until July 1983 and was then the acting vice-president between October 1983 and July 1984. Afterwards he was chairman of the DC parliamentary group in the Senate until December 1985 and held this office again from July 1987 to July 1989 and between April and June 1992.

On June 28, 1992 he was appointed Minister of the Interior by Prime Minister Giuliano Amato in his first cabinet and held this ministerial office in the subsequent first government of Prime Minister Carlo Azeglio Ciampi until April 19, 1994. At the same time, he was from April 29, 1993 to April 19, 1994 Minister without Portfolio responsible for the coordination of civil protection.

After the dissolution of the DC, he became a member of the Partito Popolare Italiano (PPI) and was re-elected to the Senate on March 27, 1994, to which he was a member until his resignation on July 24, 2006. Between April 1994 and May 1996 he was also chairman of the PPI parliamentary group in the Senate.

He then became President of the Senate on May 9, 1996 and held this office for a little over five years until May 29, 2001.

Mancino, who last belonged to the La Margherita - Democrazia è Libertà party that emerged from the PPI , was last elected senator on April 9, 2006, but then resigned his mandate three months later. Most recently he was chairman of the Standing Committee on Constitutional Affairs from June 6 to July 11, 2006.

After leaving the Senate, he became Vice-President of the Consiglio Superiore della Magistratura (Supreme Court Council) on August 1, 2006 and worked there until August 2, 2010.
