Domenico Luca Marco Minniti (called Marco Minniti ; born June 6, 1956 in Reggio Calabria ) is an Italian politician of the Partito Democratico . From December 12, 2016 to June 1, 2018, he was Italian Interior Minister .

Life

After studying philosophy, his political career began in the Communist Party , first at the local and regional level in Calabria , then in the leadership of the successor party to the left- wing democrats ( Democratici di Sinistra ).

In 1996 he won a direct mandate in the parliamentary elections in his home town's constituency and thus entered the Italian Chamber of Deputies for the first time . Under Prime Minister Massimo D'Alema he was State Secretary in the Prime Minister's Office from 1998 to 2000 , and then State Secretary in the Ministry of Defense until 2001 .

After Minniti was in 2001 and again in 2006 elected to the Chamber of Deputies, he took over in May 2006 in the second government of Romano Prodi vice ministerial posts in the Interior Ministry. After the early parliamentary elections in 2008, as a result of which Minniti moved into the Chamber of Deputies for the fourth time, as an opposition politician he first concentrated on his role as " shadow minister of the interior " and then on tasks in the governing bodies of the Partito Democratico : from 2007 to 2009 he was regional party chairman in Calabria and also responsible for security policy in the national party leadership.

In February 2009, Minniti became chairman of the Democratic Party's "Security Forum". On December 1, 2009, he founded the Intelligence Culture and Strategic Analysis (ICSA) foundation in Rome, which aims to develop innovative policies in the fields of security, defense and intelligence. Minniti became chairman, the honorary chairmanship went to the former president Francesco Cossiga .

In the 2013 general election in Italy , Minniti was elected as the regional top candidate for the Senate . From May 17, 2013 to December 12, 2016, he was State Secretary in the Letta and Renzi Cabinets in the Prime Minister's Office, where he was responsible for the intelligence services of Italy . On December 12, 2016, he took over the office of Minister of the Interior in the Gentiloni cabinet .

On July 25, 2017, Minniti announced that ships of the Italian Navy would support the Libyan unity government in its fight against illegal immigration. In fact, arrivals fell from 11,461 people in July 2017 to 3,940 people in August 2017. This decrease is mainly attributed to the policies of the Italian interior minister, Minniti.
