Luciana Lamorgese (born on 11. September 1953 in Potenza ) is an Italian non-party politician and former top civil servant. She was prefect of several Italian provinces and the metropolitan city of Milan and a member of the Consiglio di Stato (Council of State). Since September 5, 2019, she has been Italy's Interior Minister in the Conte II cabinet .

Career

Lamorgese completed a law degree , graduated with honors and was admitted to the bar. From 1979 she worked as a civil servant for the Italian Ministry of the Interior . She worked in the Prefecture of the Province of Varese , where she was promoted to Vice Prefect in 1994 and Prefect in 2003. She then moved to the headquarters of the Ministry of the Interior in Rome, where she was Director of Human Resources in the Office of Internal and Territorial Affairs. In 2010 she was appointed Prefect of the Province of Venice , a position she held until 2013. From 2011 she was responsible for the construction and management of reception facilities in the Veneto region .

From June 2013 she acted - again in Rome - as head of cabinet of the then Interior Ministers Angelino Alfano ( Nuovo Centrodestra ) and Marco Minniti ( Partito Democratico ). From February 13, 2017 to October 1, 2018, she was Prefect of the metropolitan city of Milan . She worked closely with Mayor Giuseppe Sala (PD) on the distribution of migrants and therefore came into conflict with members of the Lega Nord on several occasions . She is regarded as an expert in the asylum system and in managing migration flows .

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte appointed Lamorgese in November 2018 - one month after her regular retirement - to the Consiglio di Stato , which advises the government on legal issues. After the failure of Conte's first government made up of Lega and Movimento 5 Stelle , Lamorgese was appointed Interior Minister in the Conte II cabinet - a coalition of 5 Stelle and PD - in September 2019 .

Luciana Lamorgese is married and has two children.
