Virginio Rognoni (born August 5, 1924 in Corsico , province of Milan ) is a former Italian lawyer and politician of the Democrazia Cristiana (DC), who represented the constituency of Milan for 26 years as a member of the Camera dei deputati and represented both domestic and judiciary - and was Minister of Defense of Italy .

Life

Lawyer, local politician and member of parliament

After attending the Humanist High School ( Liceo Classico ) Ugo Foscolo in Pavia , he first studied history at the Collegio Ghislieri there and was involved in the Resistancea , the anti-fascist resistance in Italy , during the Second World War . After the end of the war, he began to study law at the University of Pavia in November 1947 and, after a guest study from 1949 to 1950, began working as a lawyer at Yale University .

In 1960 he began his political career in local politics when he was elected as a representative of the Democrazia Cristiana to the city ​​council of Pavia and belonged to it until 1964. Subsequently, between 1964 and 1967, he was Vice- Mayor and Department Head ( Assessore ) for the town planning of Pavias.

On May 30, 1968, he was elected for the first time for the DC as a member of the Chamber of Deputies, the Camera dei deputati , and represented the constituency of Milan for 26 years until 1994 . During his long membership in parliament, he was a member of various parliamentary committees before he was one of the vice-presidents of the Chamber of Deputies from July 1976 to July 1978.

Minister and Vice President of the CSM

On June 13, 1978, Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti appointed him Minister of the Interior ( Ministro dell'Interno ) to his fourth cabinet. He held this position in Andreotti's fifth cabinet and in the subsequent governments of Prime Ministers Francesco Cossiga , Arnaldo Forlani , Giovanni Spadolini and Amintore Fanfani until August 4, 1983. During his tenure, in 1980, the kidnapping of the German journalist's daughters and a nephew Dieter Kronzucker in Tuscany . After leaving the government, he was chairman of the DC faction in the Chamber of Deputies between July 1983 and August 1986 , before being appointed Minister-President Bettino Craxi as Minister of Justice ( Ministro della Giustizia ) in the latter's second cabinet on August 1, 1986 . He also held this office in the subsequent sixth Fanfani government until July 28, 1987.

After he was chairman of the Judiciary Committee of the Chamber of Deputies between July 1988 and July 1990, he was appointed Minister of Defense ( Ministro della Difesa ) by Prime Minister Andreotti in his sixth government on July 27, 1990 and held this post in Andreotti's seventh government until April 28 , 1990 June 1992. During this time he was also Chancellor and Treasurer of the Military Order ( Ordine militare d'Italia ).

After the dissolution of the DC he became a member of the Partito Popolare Italiano (PPI) in January 1994 and resigned from the Chamber of Deputies on April 14, 1994.

Most recently, between 2002 and 2006, Rognoni was Vice-President of the Consiglio Superiore della Magistratura , the self-governing body of Italian judges and public prosecutors working in the ordinary courts .
