Andrea Orlando (born February 8, 1969 in La Spezia ) is an Italian politician of the Partito Democratico (PD). From February 22, 2014 to June 1, 2018, he was the Italian Minister of Justice .

Political career

Orlando was elected in 1990 as a member of the Communist Party (PCI) to the city council of his hometown La Spezia, where he was responsible for economics and spatial planning as an alderman from 1997. In 2001 he became provincial chairman of the Left Democrats (successor to the PCI), and in 2003 he was appointed to the national party executive committee, where he was responsible for matters relating to cities and towns.

After the parliamentary elections in 2006, he entered the Chamber of Deputies . In the early parliamentary elections in 2008, he moved into the Chamber for the Democratic Party (successor to the Left Democrats) and worked there on the Budget Committee and the Anti-Mafia Committee. In 2010 he received a seat in the council of the province of La Spezia as a successor . In the 2013 parliamentary elections , he was first on the electoral list in Liguria , as he had previously won the most votes in his region in primary elections .

Orlando was appointed Environment Minister in the Letta cabinet on April 28, 2013, and then Minister of Justice in the Renzi cabinet on February 22, 2014 .
