Francesco Paolo Bonifacio
Francesco Paolo Bonifacio (born May 3, 1923 in Castellammare di Stabia , Province of Naples , † March 14, 1989 in Rome ) was an Italian lawyer , university professor and politician of the Democrazia Cristiana (DC), who was both judge and president of the Constitutional Court ( Corte Costituzionale ) and Minister of Justice of Italy .
Life
After attending school, Bonifacio completed a law degree and, after completing his studies, accepted a professorship in public law and Roman law at the University of Naples , where he taught until 1963.
On October 2, 1963, he was elected judge at the Constitutional Court , the Corte Costituzionale , for a twelve-year term and took up this office on October 25, 1963. On November 13, 1964, he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic . On February 23, 1973 he was elected President of the Constitutional Court to succeed Giuseppe Chiarelli and held this office until his replacement by Paolo Rossi at the end of his twelve-year term on October 25, 1975.
On February 12, 1976, Bonifacio was appointed Minister for Pardons and Justice ( Ministro di Grazia e Giustizia ) by Prime Minister Aldo Moro in his fifth cabinet, and he also held this office during Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti's third and fourth terms until March 20, 1979 out. On November 1, 1976 Bonifacio also became Professor of Public Law at La Sapienza University in Rome.
During his tenure as Minister of Justice, he was elected a member of the Senate ( Senato della Repubblica ) on June 20, 1976 and was a member of it until July 1, 1987. Most recently he was chairman of the Standing Committee on Constitutional Affairs from August 1983 to July 1987.
On May 11, 2011, his native town, Castellammare di Stabia, posthumously named the Piazza Francesco Paolo Bonifacio in the San Marco district in his honor .
