Antonio La Pergola (born November 13, 1931 in Catania , † July 18, 2007 in Rome ) was an Italian lawyer and politician who served as chairman of the Italian Constitutional Court .

Life and professional activities

In 1952, La Pergola graduated from the University of Catania with a law degree . He taught Italian and comparative constitutional law at the universities of Padua , Bologna and, most recently, Rome .

In 1976 parliament elected him a member of the Italian Supreme Judicial Council . Two years later he was appointed by President Giovanni Leone as judge of the Constitutional Court, of which he was chairman from June 24, 1986 to June 14, 1987.

After the end of his term of office, the highly respected lawyer became Minister for the Affairs of the European Communities ( Politiche comunitarie ) in the governments of Goria and De Mita (1987-1989).

In 1989 he ran on the list of the Italian Socialist Democratic Party and was a member of the European Parliament from 1989 to 1994 . There he chaired the Committee on Energy, Research and Technology and then the Committee on Culture, Youth, Education and the Media.

Named by the Ciampi government , he worked from 1994 to 2006 as judge (1994, 1999–2006) and advocate general (1995–1999) of the European Court of Justice .
