Francesco Amirante (born April 16, 1933 in Naples ) is an Italian lawyer. He was President of the Italian Constitutional Court from 2009 to 2010 .

In 1958, Amirante graduated from the Federico II University of Naples with a law degree and became a member of the city's magistrate . Later he was pretore (magistrate) in Forlì , Vicenza and Lagonegro . He also worked in the Bankruptcy Department at the Neapolitan Court of Justice. In 1980 he became an employee of the Ufficio del Massimario at the Corte Suprema di Cassazione , the highest court of ordinary jurisdiction.

Amirante was appointed constitutional judge in 2001 and vice-president of the Italian constitutional court on November 14, 2008. On February 25, 2009 Amirante was elected 33rd President of the Constitutional Court with 13 votes and two abstentions. He nominated Ugo De Siervo as its Vice President . In his first speech in his new role, Amirante underlined the importance of the independence of the court, its importance for the protection of the independence of other institutions and of fundamental rights, such as B. freedom of the press in a democracy.

On December 10, 2010, Amirante resigned from the Constitutional Court. His successor as president was Ugo De Siervo.
