Paolo Grossi

Paolo Grossi (born January 29, 1933 in Florence ) is an Italian legal historian and former constitutional judge and president of the Italian constitutional court .

Life

In 1955 Grossi graduated from the University of Florence with a law degree . He was professor of legal history at the universities of Siena , Macerata and, most recently, Florence . In Florence, he supported the establishment of the Centro di studi per la storia del pensiero giuridico moderno and the journal Quaderni fiorentini per la storia del pensiero giuridico moderno . From 1989 to 1998 he was a member of the advisory board of the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History in Frankfurt . In 2008 he retired as a university professor. On February 17, 2009, Paolo Grossi was appointed constitutional judge by President Giorgio Napolitano . On February 24, 2016, he was unanimously elected President of the Constitutional Court. Since his nine-year term ended on February 23, 2018, Paolo Grossi also resigned from the presidency.

In addition, Paolo Grossi is a member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei , the Accademia dei Georgofili in Florence and the Accademia delle Scienze in Turin . He has received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Frankfurt am Main , Stockholm , Autònoma de Barcelona , Autónoma de Madrid and Seville . After he was appointed by the bishops of Tuscany, he served as judge of the Roman Catholic Church Court of Etruria between 1996 and 2004 . Since February 25, 2009 he has been the holder of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic .
