The Autonomous University of Barcelona ( Catalan : Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona , Spanish : Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona ) is a university near the Spanish city ​​of Barcelona . It was founded on June 6, 1968 and focuses its activities on the Bellaterra campus in the Vallès Occidental district , 30 kilometers from the center of Barcelona. Other university facilities exist in Manresa , Sabadell , Terrassa , Sant Cugat del Vallès and Barcelona. The Vila Universitària, a residential complex with 812 apartments that can accommodate 2,193 people, is also located on campus.

History and profile

It was founded on June 6, 1968 by enactment of a law, previously there were plans for a second university in Barcelona during the Second Spanish Republic , but due to the civil war and the subsequent years of poverty in the early years of the Franco dictatorship, it was not realized could become.

On October 6th of the same year, the first lecture of the Faculty of Humanities was given in the Sant Cugat del Vallès Monastery , and also in October the Faculty of Medicine was established in the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau in Barcelona. The land on which the campus is located today was acquired in 1969 and after several years of construction most of the university's faculties are housed there.

With the end of the dictatorship, the university presented its plan for a democratic, independent model university in the so-called "Bellaterra Manifesto".

From 1985 to 1992 several organizational reforms were carried out and some new faculties were established.
