The X 4900 series of the French state railway SNCF is a three-part diesel multiple unit of the Caravelle family. It is derived from the two-part X 4630 , with which it shares the Saurer SDHR diesel engine with 330 kW output and the hydraulic transmission. The railcars are stronger than all the others in the Caravelle family, as they consist of two motor cars and a middle car. This enables them to accelerate to a top speed of 140 km / h. The external appearance differs from the other railcars in the family in that the color scheme chosen is blue, white and gray. The interior design has been carefully designed and benches have been left out in favor of single seats. 10 of the 13 vehicles received new driver's cabs after a conversion after 2000.

The numbering of the railcars is chosen so that two consecutive numbers include a non-motorized intermediate car of the XR 8900 series. The train that went into service on May 22, 1975 was the first to have the numbers X 4901 + XR 8901 + X 4902, the last train that was put into service on January 18, 1977 had the numbers X 4925 + XR 8913 + X 4926.

The first six vehicles were initially located at the Marseille-Blancarde depot, which led to the replacement of the X 2400 and X 2800 series in the region. Due to their higher performance, the vehicles were used on the steep stretches of the Southern Alps. The other seven units were assigned to the Sotteville-lès-Rouen depot .

The 4900 units in Normandy drove coupled with the vehicles of the series X 4500 and X 4750 in the area of the cities of Caen , Rouen and Le Mans , but also to Rennes and Tours . In the south they remained in Marseille until the arrival of the BB 67400 series and were then also relocated to their sibling vehicles in Normandy. Despite the use of the newer vehicles of the X 72500 series and some of the X 73500 series in Normandy, the X 4900 series kept their previous schedule there.

The three vehicles in Basse-Normandie were extensively renewed at the beginning of the 21st century, but kept their original paintwork. The ten trains in Haute-Normandie received the new TER paint and a completely new driver's cab, which is identical to those of the vehicles from the X 4630 series that have also been converted . In contrast to the X 4300 and X 4500 series, the X 4900 series can be used for another 15 years with the conversion.

The trains were decommissioned between December 2015 and December 2016. The units X 4903/04 and X 4911/12 remained with the Train touristique du center-Var in Besse-sur-Issole .
