Besse-sur-Issole is a French municipality with 3039 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .

Personalities

Gaspard Bouis (1757–1781), called Gaspard de Besse , was a mugger who lived in the 18th century. According to legend, he plundered royal treasure officials and nobles in the Massif des Maures and distributed the booty among the poor. Gaspard Bouis was born in Besse-sur-Issole. Jean Aicard recognized him literarily as a bandit with the heart of a nobleman.
