View of Cotignac

Cotignac ( Provence Coutignac or Cotinhac ) is a commune with 2,163 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .

geography

Cotignac is located opposite a rock in the north along the Cassolle , the small river that flows through the municipality from north to south and finally falls over 10 m deep in a waterfall into the valley. On the Mont Verdaille in the southwest, which overlooks the right bank of the river, lies the Notre-Dame-de-Grâces chapel, which was founded in 1519 and used to be a famous pilgrimage destination in Provence for women whose desire to have children remained unfulfilled. To the north, on the slope of the Bessillon, is the Saint-Joseph chapel , which is also the destination of many pilgrims.

Below the village there is an 80 m high and 400 m long tuff rock wall in which there are numerous caves, some of which contain enormous stalactites . There is also the 50 m deep karst cave called La Salle des Merveilles with more than 200 m long corridors. A little further away is the Trompines stalactite cave , where the water from the Saint-Martin spring collects.

Catholic Church

Cotignac is of particular importance to the Catholic Church. She acknowledges two appearances of Mary and one of St. Joseph. A place of worship is dedicated to both saints: the Notre Dame de Grâces chapel is dedicated to St. Mary, the Saint-Joseph du Bessillon monastery to St. Joseph.

Personalities

Louis XIV and his mother Anna of Austria came to Cotignac on February 21, 1659 to thank Louis for having been born 20 years ago. The Swiss writer and fire-fighting expert Hermann Degner made the community his adopted home.
