Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte- Baume is a French municipality with 16,433 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It is the capital of the canton of the same name in the Arrondissement of Brignoles .

Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume is located in a small basin that was the bottom of a lake in ancient times, near the sources of the Argens .

Attractions
Saint-Maximin is best known for the Ste-Marie-Madeleine basilica , which is the largest Gothic church in Provence . This is also one of the largest Baroque organs of France , which in 1773 by the monk Isnard was created and attracts music lovers from around the world. The tomb of Mary Magdalene is said to be located under the cathedral in a crypt .
Next to the basilica are the Gothic Couvent Royal , a former Dominican convent from the 13th to 15th centuries, and the baroque town hall from 1750.
