Le Val is a commune with 4295 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the canton of Brignoles in the Brignoles arrondissement of the same name .

history

Already in the Copper Age, around 2500 BC. People lived in the region. In Les Essartènes near Le Val there are caves with wall paintings and rock engravings , which have been declared Inscrit Monument Historique . Later, in the 1st millennium BC BC, Ligurian tribes from the east and Celts immigrating from the north settled in the region. The Celtic-Ligurian culture, which shaped Provence into the Roman era, emerged from their mixing.

Attractions

  • The Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption church, consecrated in 1068, was originally built in the Romanesque style. It was enlarged in the 17th century. The Romanesque nave opens onto side chapels from the 17th century. Columns rise up to their capitals adorned with rafter heads . The frescoes in the church were restored in the 18th century.
  • The Notre-Dame-de-Pitié pilgrimage chapel was built in 1659. The facade of the building, which is protected as a monument historique , is decorated with seashells , like that of the Sainte-Catherine chapel . Small prayer chapels from the 17th century, classified as Inscrit Monument Historique , line the way to the chapel .

economy

The Studio de Miraval was located northwest of Le Val in the Château Miraval of the same name, which belongs to the neighboring municipality of Correns . Numerous productions by French and international artists have been recorded in this recording studio. Miraval has produced for AC / DC , The Cure , Pink Floyd , The Cranberries , Indochine and Téléphone , among others . The château later became the property of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt , who also married there. The château is now the location of a wine producer.
