history

The area of Méounes was already settled in Gallo-Roman times. Stones from a temple from this period were used to build the church.

The medieval settlement has been documented since 1060, when the place was mentioned as Molna , which was a district of Signes until it was separated from the mother community in 1252. The name probably goes back etymologically to the Celtic word for mountain. Local rule was exercised by the counts and later by the bishops of Marseilla.

The Montrieux Charterhouse , founded in 1117, had two famous priories . In 1150 it was Jean d'Espagne who founded the Charterhouse Le Reposoir in the Savoy Alps in 1151 . In the 14th century, Gérard Petrarca, the brother of the famous Italian poet Francesco Petrarca , ran the monastery.

Culture and sights

The townscape of the historic center of Méounes-lès-Montrieux with its old streets and beautiful house entrances is very picturesque. The fountains are particularly worth seeing, of which the one built in the 17th to 18th centuries on the Place des Ecoles is under special monument protection as Inscrit Monument Historique . A little outside the village are the ruins of the old village of Montrieux-le-Vieux .

The parish church of the Assumption from the 16th century combines Romanesque and Gothic elements. Stones from an ancient Gallo-Roman temple were used to build the church. It was enlarged in the 17th century and has since consisted of three naves, a tower with a domed roof on six columns. The peculiar side portals are classified as Inscrit Monument Historique . The treasure of the church includes a retable made of gilded wood and marble angels by Antoine Duparc .

The Karthaus consists of two parts. One stands in the middle of the forest in Montrieux-le-Vieux. The now dilapidated buildings served as lay accommodation in the 12th century and are registered as another Inscrit Monument Historique . The other, much larger part was in Montrieux-le-Jeune, was built in the 12th century and renewed in the 17th and 19th centuries. The small monastery and a Monument Historique rated Chapel Sainte-Roseline was Charles II., King of Naples, titular king of Jerusalem, Prince of Salerno and Count of Provence built in Angevin style. The altar of the chapter house , attributed to the sculptor Pierre Puget , is the former main altar of the chapel of the Carthusian monastery La Verne .
