Carnoules is a French municipality with 3448 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .

geography

The mountainous plateau of Thèmes, in which Carnoules is located, descends towards the southeast. In the valley floor there are vineyards and a fertile plain through which the Réal-Martin and other small streams flow. To the north and south of the community there are densely wooded ridges.

history

In the 11th century the place appears in the sources as Ad Carnoles and Carnelas . A simple village was built around the royal castle, under the rule of the College of Pignans. Castrum shelves was destroyed in 1383.

In 1592 the place was the scene of a battle between Henry IV of France and Charles Emanuel I of Savoy .

economy

Vines, olives and cork oaks are grown in Carnoules. The further processing of the cork into wine corks takes place in domestic production. The wine is made by the local cooperative . The quality wines are part of the AOC Côtes de Provence .
