Camps-la-Source is a French commune with 1,906 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .

geography

Camps-la-Source is five kilometers southwest of Brignoles at the foot of the rocky slopes of the 591 m high Saint-Quinis. The river Val de Camps , a tributary of the Caramy , which gave the municipality its name, rises here, along with many other small springs .

history

Below the village, the remains of a Gallo-Roman villa and an enclosed spring attest to the ancient settlement of the area.

In the 6th century, St. Quenin retired to his hermitage in the wild rocky landscape that was later named after him, before he became Bishop of Vaison-la-Romaine in 556 .

In the Middle Ages, Camps-la-Source was first mentioned in 1012 as in Camis and a little later in 1060 as de Camps . For a long time the place was called Camps-les-Brignoles . It was under the rule of the nearby La Celle Abbey .

In the 18th century there were thirty felt hat factories in the municipality. The last one ceased operations until the middle of the 20th century.

Culture and sights

Parish Church of Notre-Dame

The place on the slope above a plain shaped by viticulture has retained some of its original character. Narrow streets and tall houses with beautifully designed wooden or stone lintels characterize the townscape. At the source there are partially walled arcades from the 19th century. The former factory with a medieval-style entrance gate is the last remnant of the previously flourishing felt production.

  • The parish church of Notre-Dame and its tower was built in the classical style and rebuilt several times.
  • The Saint-Clair church from 1525 has a Gothic vault.
  • Next to the uphill Saint-Quinis pilgrimage chapel are the ruins of buildings that were built by the Trinitarians in 1646. From here there is a beautiful panorama over the plain in the north.
  • On the way to Saint-Quinis are the dilapidated Saint-Martin chapel and the Saint-Sébastien chapel .

Museums

The former wine cellar of the cooperative was recently acquired by the municipality and converted into a wine museum.

economy

The numerous springs and the associated abundance of water were the basis of the most important branches of industry for a long time. In addition to grain and viticulture and cattle breeding, felt and felt hat production and the production of mineral water by the French mineral water producer Vittel used to be important economic factors . In the meantime, tourism has become the town's main source of income alongside agriculture.

Parish partnership

The municipality is connected to the Italian municipality of San Biagio della Cima in Liguria through a municipal partnership.
