Sainte-Anastasie-sur-Issole is a French commune with 1,973 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the canton of Garéoult in the Arrondissement of Brignoles .
geography
Sainte-Anastasie-sur-Issole lies on the banks of the Issole in the middle of the river plain, overlooked in the south by the 483 m high Porte Etroite and in the north by the 553 m high Barre de Saint-Quinis .
The GR long-distance hiking trail 9 leads through the community.
history
The prehistoric settlement of the area is documented by finds of flint stones and jewelry in a cave. A little below the village there was a Ligurian camp.
Between the first and second empires, the later uninhabited town of Naples was built on the foundations of a Roman camp.
The village was first mentioned as Sancta Enestazia in 1252 . At that time it was a fiefdom of the Abbey of Saint-Victor , later it fell to the Chapter of Pignans . The rule was with Hubert de Garde, the lord of Vins .
The current settlement came into being after the Second Empire .
Attractions
- Sainte-Anastasie-sur-Issole is a small quiet village on the slope of a mountain ledge with a maze of small streets.
- An old beam bridge leads over the Issole.
- The parish church of Saint-Just with its low, somewhat squat bell tower was enlarged in the 19th century.
- A processional path leads from the hamlet of Naples to the Saint-Quinis chapel.
Personalities
- Gaspard Bouis (1757–1781), also known as Gaspard de Besse , was born in the neighboring village of Besse-sur-Issole and was a mugger who lived in the 18th century . According to legend, he plundered royal treasure officials and nobles in the Massif des Maures and distributed the booty among the poor. Gaspard Bouis is said to have turned the fortified cave in the cliffs of Saint-Quinis into a base.
