Régusse ( Provence Regusso ) is a French municipality with 2613 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the canton of Flayosc in the Arrondissement of Brignoles .

geography

Régusse is located three kilometers from Moissac-Bellevue , seven kilometers from Aups and Montmeyan and twelve kilometers from Lac de Sainte-Croix on a rocky hilltop between a fertile plain and wooded hills. The municipality is located in the Verdon Regional Nature Park .

The village of Saint-Jean in the north of the municipality was built in the 1980s as a new building area around the chapel of the same name in order to counteract migration.

history

The origins of the municipality of Régusse go back to Roman times, when a settlement on a rocky hill called Régussia was built on Celtic-Ligurian foundations .

In the Middle Ages, the Knights Templar and the Coming Saint Maurin played an important role in Montmeyan. In 1274 the place was a fiefdom of the order until it became royal land in 1309. In 1319 the rule went to the Johanniter and over Arnaud de Trians by marriage to the Castellane family, who sold it to César-Antoine d'Albert in the 16th century.

During the Huguenot Wars, the village was besieged, occupied and finally abandoned by its inhabitants. From 1580 the reconstruction of the place by Hungarian settlers began. Albert sold the place to Michel de Grimaldi in 1613 . In 1649 the place was appointed marquisate in favor of his son Gaspard de Grimaldi . His rule included the villages of Saint-Martin, Villeneuve, La Tour, the barony of Roumoules , Pailouvier and Riez .

In 1840 the neighboring village of Villeneuve (also Villeneuve-Coutelas ) lost its independence and was incorporated into the municipality of Régusse. In 1875 the village gave the bell of its chapel to the Saint-Laurent church in Régusse.

population

Due to a sustained high migration gain, the population of the community, which had only 207 inhabitants at the beginning of the 1960s, increased more than eightfold by the 2006 survey, despite the consistently negative birth rate .

Attractions

The place, located on a rocky hill, was able to preserve the remains of its former fortifications and numerous remarkable old buildings.

  • The Notre-Dame de la Miséricorde chapel was first mentioned in 1642. She was used for prayer by a brotherhood of white penitents . Today it houses the Maison du Combattant museum .
  • The Saint-Jean d'Albert chapel was built in the 17th century.
  • The Saint-Laurent church was built in 1676.
  • The windmills, registered as Inscrit Monument Historique , were built in the 12th and 13th centuries and restored in 1995. A museum for agricultural tools was set up in one of the two mills, the other is again in operation as a flour mill. The windmills of Provence go back to the Knights Templar , who adopted the concept from the holy land. In 1811 the mills were still producing over 50 tons of flour per year, but were then idle until they were restored. The construction of the Provencal windmills is adapted to the two prevailing winds, the east wind and the mistral , in that the conical roof and the blades can be aligned.
