The Lac de Sainte-Croix is a reservoir located in France on the border of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and Var departments . It is located in the Verdon Regional Nature Park .
The damming of the Verdon River began in 1973, with the Sainte-Croix Dam, under construction since 1971, being completed in 1974. The reservoir covers an area of about 21.8 km² with a maximum depth of about 90 meters and a water content of up to 761 million m³. It is the second largest reservoir in France after Lac de Serre-Ponçon .
The village of Les Salles-sur-Verdon was flooded due to the construction of the dam or lake. 400 meters from the location of the old village, the village was rebuilt. During the damming, a historical bridge from the 6th century sank in the reservoir, which spanned the Verdon with nine arches. The bridge was built by bishops from Riez , but is often incorrectly referred to as the Roman Bridge.
The reservoir, which is mainly used for energy generation and water supply, is a popular tourist destination. Bathing and surfing is allowed, as is sailing and electric boats. The beaches on the lake are mainly pebble or stony natural beaches.
The Verdon tributary initially flows through one of the deepest gorges in Europe, the Verdon Gorge , before flowing directly into the lake at its western end.
The lake was the location of the 2013 French film Der Fremde am See .
