Les Salles-sur-Verdon ( Provence Lei Salas de Verdon or Lei Salo-sus-Verdoun ) is a French municipality with 245 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in Provence in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d ' Azure . It belongs to the canton of Flayosc in the Arrondissement of Brignoles .
geography
The village used to be on the Verdon River , whose regular floods created fertile farmland. Wheat, almonds, fruit, lavender and especially truffle oak were grown. In 1971, due to the construction of the Sainte-Croix dam , the village was rebuilt 400 m further at a higher point. Almost all the buildings in the old village, including the church, were blown up in 1974 and then flooded by the damming of Lac de Sainte-Croix . Only the church tower clock, the village bell and the old village fountain were dismantled from the old village and rebuilt in the new village. Some of the residents resisted until the very end and stayed in their houses even though the water had already entered them. After the last harvest, before the village was destroyed, the farmers brought another four tons of truffles to the market in Riez .
Today Les Salles lives from tourism and is an important tourist destination in the region with a hotel, various shops and a few campsites. The damming of the Verdon attracts many tourists, especially from the Netherlands , Germany , Belgium and Italy . The municipality is located in the Verdon Regional Nature Park .
Parish partnership
Les-Salles-sur-Verdon is partnered with Luz in Portugal, which was also relocated because of the construction of a dam.
