Néoules is a French commune with 2,712 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .

geography

The municipality of Néoules is located in the center of the department of Var, known as Provence Verte , at the foot of the Massif de la Verrerie and the Massif de Saint-Clément with the 704 m high Pilon de Saint-Clément . Opposite, on the other side of the plain through which the Issole flows, the Montagne de la Loube rises to the north .

The long-distance hiking trail GR9 crosses the municipality.

history

Remains from prehistoric times and antiquity attest to the settlement of the area from the Neolithic to the Gallo-Roman era.

The first medieval source that the village Novulas mentioned dates back to 1036. Two hundred years later is Neoulis talk. The place was under the rule of the Counts, later the Bishops of Marseille and finally that of the Alard de Brignoles . The original town center of La Bataillère was a little east of today's center. The settlement of today's place began around 1520.

Since the mid-1970s, Néoules has experienced rapid population growth. A migration gain of over 6% annually on average let the population increase from fewer than 400 in 1975 to more than six times the figure in 2015.

Culture and sights

  • The former castle of Casteù de Luen was built in 1570 with four towers that fell victim to the latest construction phase.
  • At the entrance to the village there is a tower near a fountain, which is adorned with a bell tower. Numerous other wells can be found in the old town center. In the former center of La Bataillère, parts of the fortification wall and a keep have been preserved
  • The parish church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste was built in the 16th century and enlarged in the 17th century.

economy

In agricultural production, wine, grain, pine and aromatic plants are grown. The quality wines are allowed to carry the AOC Coteaux Varois en Provence seal .
