history
The name of the place Entrecasteaux, which means “between castles”, goes back to its location between the medieval fortifications of Pardigon, Riforan and Salgues. Entrecasteaux itself was originally surrounded by stone walls, under whose protection a village developed from the 10th century. The first known written mention took place in 1012 as Intercastra in the Cartulaire of the Saint-Victor monastery in Marseille .
In the 11th century, Entrecasteaux became a county of the Castellane family , followed by the Counts of Grignan in the 14th century . From 1670 they had the Entrecasteaux Castle built on the basis of an existing castle, the outdoor facilities of which were designed by André Le Nôtre . Among the residents of the castle in the 18th century was the navigator and explorer Joseph Bruny d'Entrecasteaux , whose family had acquired the Entrecasteaux fief in 1713. After the fiefdom was given up, the castle changed hands several times and is now privately owned, but accessible to tourists.
