Lorgues

Lorgues ( Provence Lorgué ) is a French municipality with 8990 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the canton of Vidauban in the Arrondissement of Draguignan .

geography

Lorgues is located in a hilly area, surrounded by vineyards and olive trees, in the center of the Var between the Mediterranean and the Gorges du Verdon . The Argens and Florièye valleys form the natural boundaries of the municipality.

history

In 986 the town, which was important in the Middle Ages, was named Lonicus , later de Loneges . The monks of Le Thoronet Abbey and the Johanniter owned numerous properties in the community. Ludwig II of Anjou granted the place the communal freedom rights.

Attractions

  • The parish church and former collegiate church of Saint-Martin surprises with its dimensions. It is one of the largest in the department. The church was built in the 18th century in neoclassical style. The church tower with a square floor plan dates from the 11th and 13th centuries. Inside the three-aisled church there is, among other things, a remarkable main altar, which is decorated at its corners with the heads of girls and angels, as well as a Madonna by the sculptor Pierre Puget .
  • Dolmens and Ligurian oppida testify to the prehistoric settlement of the region.

Personalities

  • The writers Casimir Dauphin (1820–1888) and Marius Trussy (* 1797) were born in Lorgues.
  • Grégoire Mourre (1762-1832) came from Lorgues. He was a high French official during the Revolution , First Empire, and Restoration .
