Sirkka Tellervo Polkunen , since her wedding Sirka Tellervo Vilander (born November 6, 1927 in Jyväskylä ; † September 28, 2014 ) was a Finnish cross-country skier who started in the 1950s.

Career

Polkunen won bronze over 10 km at the Finnish Championships in 1951, which were held during the Lahti Ski Games . The following year she was part of the Finnish squad at the Olympic Winter Games in Oslo in 1952 , which was also rated as the Nordic World Ski Championships. Over 10 km there she achieved a good result with fifth place, but she narrowly missed a medal.

At the Lahti Ski Games in 1953, Polkunen again secured third place over 10 km. At the Finnish championships that were held at the same time, she won bronze again. In the Nordic World Ski Championships 1954 in Sweden's Falun secured Polkunen together with Mirja Hietamies and Siiri Rantanen the silver medal in the relay. In addition, she secured sixth place over 10 km.

In 1955 Polkunen secured victory in the cross-country skiing race in Zakopane, Poland . A year later at the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo , the Finn finished eighth over 10 km. A little later she secured the Olympic victory in the 3 × 5 km relay together with Rantanen and Hietamies and thus also became world champion. At the Finnish championships in the same year, she secured the bronze medal over 10 km for the third time in her career.

Polkunen worked during and after her active sports career as a warehouse clerk and packer in the Vihtavuori black powder factory.
