Marina Charlotte Kalla (born July 22, 1987 in Tärendö , Pajala municipality ) is a Swedish cross-country skier . She achieved her greatest successes with the Olympic victory over 10 km at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, the Olympic victory in skiathlon at the Olympic Winter Games 2018 and the world title over 10 km in Falun 2015 .

Career

First successes as a junior

Charlotte Kalla, who lives in Östersund and competes for IFK Tärendö , made her international debut in November 2004 at the FIS race in Gällivare . In the 5 kilometer race in Gällivare, she immediately came second behind Lina Andersson . A week later she finished fourth on the same route in the same place. In general, she still competed in junior races at that time. In 2005 she became Swedish junior champion over 10 kilometers and second place over 5 kilometers and in the sprint. Towards the end of the season, she won her first FIS race over the 5-kilometer route in Kiruna . She dominated the junior races almost at will, rarely placing worse than second place. At the Junior World Championships in Kranj in 2006 , she won gold in the pursuit race, bronze over 5 kilometers and just barely missed a third medal in fourth in the sprint. Then she won again a national junior title over 5 kilometers and bronze in the sprint race in Kalix . Towards the end of the season Kalla was used in the sprint race of Changchun for the first time in the World Cup, where she was 14th.

First successes in the World Cup

At the beginning of the 2006/07 season , she finished seventh in the 10-kilometer race of Gällivare, her first top ten finish in the World Cup. in this competition it was now used increasingly. With the relay she finished second in La Clusaz in December and won a World Cup race in Davos for the first time in February . At the subsequent Nordic World Ski Championships in 2007 , she achieved remarkable results with a fifth place in the 10-kilometer race and a seventh place in the pursuit. At the following Junior World Championships, Kalla won gold over 5 kilometers as well as in the pursuit and silver behind Astrid Jacobsen in the sprint.

At the start of the 2007/08 season , Kalla won the team sprint in Düsseldorf with Britta Johansson Norgren . At the turn of the year she also won the Tour de Ski , which was the highlight of the season. She was also able to celebrate three stage wins. After the Tour de Ski, however, Kalla only achieved three individual placements among the top ten in the World Cup. The start of the 2008/09 season in Gällivare was successful again for Kalla when she won the first race of the season over 10 kilometers from Marit Bjørgen . A day later, she was also on the podium again with the relay as third. Also in December she was successful in La Clusaz as second with the season. At the Swedish Championships in 2009 she won the title in the pursuit over 15 km and over 10 km in the individual. She finished fourth in the sprint. At the World Cup in Valdidentro , she narrowly missed the podium again in fourth.

In Liberec at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2009 , Kalla won the bronze medal after finishing eighth in the pursuit and sixth in the sprint with the relay. In the mass start over 30 km, she finished 18th. At the end of the season, Kalla narrowly missed victory in Lahti and came in second. She finished third in the season finale in Falun . In the overall World Cup, Kalla finished 12th. After the end of the season, she won a total of three FIS races in Åsarna and Piteå . At the beginning of the 2009/10 season , Kalla was second in Beitostølen and won the World Cup with the relay on the same route a day later. She was second again in Davos before she defended her title at the 2010 Swedish Championships in Piteå over 10 km and won silver in the sprint and pursuit.

First Olympic victory

After she was able to win another World Cup in Canmore, Kalla won the gold medal in the 10 km freestyle at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver and was able to win silver in the team sprint together with Anna Haag . With the season she clearly missed a medal as fifth. Also in the skiathlon and over 30 km she missed a top position, but was able to place within the top 10. At the season finale in Falun, like last year, she was third again.

At the beginning of the 2010/11 season she was twice on the podium again in Gällivare, finishing second. in December 2010 she won the FIS races in the sprint and over 10 km in Skellefteå . The Tour de Ski 2010/11 ended Kalla in fifth. At the Swedish Championships 2011 in Sundsvall Kalla won the title in the pursuit. A short time later she started at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 2011 . After an eighth place in the sprint, fourth in the pursuit and 11th place over 10 km in classic style, she won the gold medal in the team sprint. Just one day later, Kalla won silver with the team in the relay race. She finished the world championship in fourth place over 30 km. In the overall World Cup ranking, Kalla was fifth overall after finishing sixth in Falun.

After she won silver in the 10 km mountain run and gold in the 24 km mass start race at the Rollerski World Championships 2011 in Aure in summer 2011 , Kalla also successfully started the 2011/12 season with a second place in Sjusjøen. In Kuusamo she was fourth overall. In Davos and Rogla, she missed good placements and only ended up in midfield. She finished the 2011/12 Tour de Ski in seventh place. In Otepää , she narrowly missed a podium finish and came in fourth. At the Swedish Championships in 2012 she won the gold medal in the skiathlon and in the individual over 10 km and silver in the sprint. In Rybinsk , Kalla was again on the podium in second place. After finishing third in Falun at the end of the season, she finished her most successful season to date in fourth place in the overall World Cup standings.

Performance slump in 2012

After the successful 2011/12 season, Kalla moved to the Piteå Elit club for the 2012/13 season and henceforth had to struggle with a drop in performance. She rarely ended up in the top places. She finished seventh in the 2012/2013 Tour de Ski . At the following Nordic World Ski Championships in 2013 in Val di Fiemme , she won the silver medal in the team sprint together with Ida Ingemarsdotter . In the season, too, Kalla won precious metal with the team. In the individual disciplines, however, she was far behind the medals.

After Kalla did not find her way back to the top of the world even after the world championship, she was eighth overall at the end of the season. At the Swedish Championships 2013 in Boden in April, she won the 30 km title.

At the beginning of the 2013/14 season she came second at the Nordic Opening in Kuusamo .
