Ulricehamn is a Swedish city ( Tatort ) in the province of Västra Götalands län and the historic province of Västergötland . The city is the capital of the municipality of the same name .
history
Ulricehamn, first mentioned in writing in the Erik chronicles as Bogesund in 1307 , has been settled since the Stone Age at the latest, as demonstrated by skeleton finds from Bredgård in Marbäck , 10,000 years old . In 1385 the place was mentioned as a settlement of saddlers and craftsmen. The place has had city rights since the 15th century. In the city there are still some old buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries, the picturesque main street Storgatan has existed for many centuries. Among the historical buildings is the town hall on the market square, a yellowish-colored rococo building from 1789.
The city is located on the Ätranstigen, a country road along the Ätran River, which extends from the Kattegat northeast inland and connects the roads to Sigtuna and Uppsala . In 1520 the Battle of Bogesund took place on the ice of Lake Åsunden , in which the Swedish knight Sten Sture the Younger was fatally wounded.
In 1741 the city was renamed Ulricehamn in honor of Queen Ulrika Eleonore . The great city fire in 1788 was followed by a recession, but several textile industry companies established themselves in the 19th century. With the connection to the first railway line (gauge 891 mm) to Vartofta in 1874, the importance of the city as a trading center increased. In 1914 the city was canalized.
Ulricehamn was renamed the municipality during the municipality reform in 1862. In 1938 the parish of Brunn, the rural community of Vist and other community settlements were incorporated. Ulricehamn was named the capital of the municipality of the same name in 1971. The office of mayor is held by Celso Silva Gonçalves .
