Västra Götalands län is a province ( län ) in western Sweden . Västra Götalands Län comprises the historical provinces of Västergötland , Bohuslän and Dalsland and was created on January 1, 1998 through the merger of Skaraborgs län , Älvsborgs län and Göteborgs och Bohus län .
With almost 1,620,000 inhabitants, Västra Götalands län is the second largest province in terms of population after Stockholm län . 16.9% of the Swedish population live here. The area accounts for 6.4% of the Swedish national territory.
The residential city is Gothenburg , other important cities are Vänersborg , Lidköping , Borås , Uddevalla , Trollhättan , Skövde and Mariestad .
