Vara is a municipality ( Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish province of Västra Götalands län and the historic province of Västergötland . The main town is Vara . Other places are Emtunga , Jung , Kvänum , Larv , Stora Levene , Tråvad , Vedum and other smaller towns.

geography

The municipality of Vara includes the so-called Vara plain , which is part of the Västgöta plain . The area is used intensively for agriculture. Numerous archaeological finds indicate an early settlement of this area. In Sparlösa in the north of the municipality is the runestone of Sparlösa, one of the largest runestones in Sweden; near Valeberg is the burial ground of Valeberg Ryd .

economy

Vara is a decidedly agricultural community. Around 7% of the workforce is employed in agriculture (the Reichs average is below 2%) and a further 35% in industry, which is dominated by small and medium-sized enterprises, often with a relation to agriculture.

Others

The municipality received on April 21, 2015, together with Dresden the European Prize , which annually by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe is awarded to those municipalities that have rendered outstanding services to the European idea.

The Virkelsborg is a Fornborg on a hill near Vara.
