The island of Hälsö

Öckerö is a municipality ( Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish province of Västra Götalands län and the historic province of Bohuslän . The main town of the municipality is Öckerö .

geography

The community is usually included in the Gothenburg archipelago . It consists of ten islands inhabited all year round, all of which are located between the lighthouse island of Vinga and Marstrand . The islands are specifically called Grötö , Hyppeln , Källö-Knippla , Björkö , Fotö , Hälsö , Kalvsund , Rörö , Hönö and Öckerö . The remaining smaller islands are not inhabited all year round.

Hönö is the largest island. From Lilla Varholmen on Hisingen in Gothenburg there are free ferry connections to Hönö and Björkö. From Hönö there is a bridge to Fotö and Öckerö, from which another bridge leads to Hälsö. The other islands can then be reached either by passenger or car ferries.

history

During the Viking Age, the islands belonged to the Kingdom of Norway and were called Älvsyssel along with the coastal strip around Gothenburg . They had a thing place where the Bohus Fortress is now. In the 13th century, King Håkon Håkonsson built a house on Öckerö as he often lay here with his fleet. In the Peace of Roskilde of 1658, Norway lost the Bohuslän province permanently to Sweden.
