The island of Hisingen is 199 square kilometers. It is bounded to the east and south by the Göta älv river , to the north by its tributary Nordre älv and to the west by the Kattegat .

In the middle of the island lie the Bronze Age roos of Skändlaberget .

On Hisingen lies the Torslanda district, where Gothenburg's international airport was located until 1977 before it was relocated to Landvetter . The production facilities for Volvo cars have also been located in Torslanda since 1964 . Also located in the district of Tuve on Hisingen the work for Volvo trucks and the Gothenburg Airport / Säve in the district Säve .

In the district of Lundby are the headquarters of Volvo , where the first Volvo passenger car was produced in 1927, and the mountain Ramberget , which, with its height of 87 meters, offers a beautiful view of Gothenburg's harbor . Most of the port of Gothenburg and some oil refineries are located on Hisingen .

Until the 1970s, the island was the location for several large shipyards , of which only one, Götaverken Cityvarvet , still exists today.
