Falköping is a municipality ( Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish province of Västra Götalands län and the historic province of Västergötland . The main town of the municipality is Falköping .
geography
In the northern part of the community lies the southern foothills of the Billingen mountain . On its east side are the towns of Borgunda (about 25 km northeast of Falköping) and Stenstorp, the birthplace of the physicist and Nobel Prize winner Gustaf Dalén , whose life and work are described in a museum (Dalén Museum). West of Billingen lies Hornborgasjön , one of the most famous bird lakes in Sweden. The Trandansen bird station is near Bjurum . Right next to it there are also two manors, Stora Bjurum and Dagsnäs Castle .
The area around the city of Falköping is shaped by the Ice Age. Table mountains (Mßeberg, Ålleberg, Gerumsberg, etc.), moraines and meltwater delta have formed a hilly landscape. The area was also settled early, as indicated by numerous graves from the Stone and Bronze Ages. This area forms the core of Falbygden , which is one of the most distinctive Neolithic cultural areas in Europe. In Ekehagens Forntidsby (Ekehagens Stone Age Village ) in Åsarp about 20 km south of Falköping, attempts have been made to reconstruct settlement forms from the Stone Age.
At Åsle, 15 km east of Falköping, a battle took place on February 24, 1389 between Albrecht von Mecklenburg and his army recruited in Germany and the later Queen Margaret . Margareta's victory led to the formation of the Kalmar Union . In Åsle there is also a poor village from the 18th and 19th centuries. Century, which was inhabited until the 1930s and is now an open-air museum.
